Students learned about "upcycling" for our One to the World unit in art. One to the World (OttW) is a new initiative set forth by Loudoun County where students learn about a "real world" problem and consider a solution. We used 15 year old Mac software CDs that were once used by Eagle Ridge MS, and "upcycled" (repurposed) them to create artwork. Their designs were inspired by the stained glass work of Louis Comfort Tiffany and mandalas. All student CDs will remain hung together for the 6th grade art show in June-they are wonderful in person!
These are really striking and beautiful, I love how different they all are! I am wondering what materials you used to color the CD (stained glass paint...? Puffy paint at parts?) and if you treated the CD at all before designing them? Thanks so much! I posted this comment another place on the site, so sorry to post again! I am just not sure where you might see it.

ReplyDeleteHi Terry! We used brush tipped Sharpies to color the designs. Students were required to come up with 2 designs in their sketchbooks before moving on to the CD that displayed radial symmetry. On their final CD, they colored their design first, and then used puffy paint to outline it, and bring their design to life. We did not treat the CD with anything.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!!!!! They are stunning!
